Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW) Overview
What is Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW)?
Planning Analytics Workspace, or PAW, is a web-based modelling and analysis tool for IBM Planning Analytics (PA). PAW will allow users to leverage existing objects in a PA model such as Cube Views, Sets, and Excel reports in addition to creating new objects and analysis.
PAW allows users to build an entire PA model, update/add data to an existing model and conduct analysis & reporting using PAW “books”, which are similar in appearance and function to a Cognos Analytics Dashboard.
Some of PAW’s Key Features Include:
- \Users can add existing views to their Books, or create brand new ones
- \Excel-based reports built with PA’s Excel add-ins can be brought into Books
- \Books can contain multiple tabs, each containing one or more widgets
- \PAW widgets allow data entry provided the user has the permissions required
- \Data entry can be done manually cell-by-cell or via data spreading
- \Books can contain both cube views and/or visualization widgets
- \Views and Visuals can have their filters synchronized
- \Sandboxes are supported for private what-if analysis
- \Snap command shortcuts allow users to search, navigate, and hide members
- \Users can “pin” widgets for re-use in other tabs or Books
Reporting in Planning Analytics Workspace

PAW Books
A book is a multi-tabbed report where users can add views, visualizations and other content. A book can contain content from multiple PA models. This is where report builders can organize data for users to consume. Books can leverage templates, themes and other formatting features to story tell their analysis in visually appealing ways.
Visualizations
Within PAW, report builders can choose from many pre-defined visualizations to showcase their data for end-user consumption. There are also various draggable widgets, such as text and image widgets to add additional details or elements to a book.

Cube Views
A useful and important element within PAW is the cube view. This is how report builders and end users can view the data within a multi-dimensional PA cube by using draggable dimensions and pivoting the cube to conduct analysis. This can be thought of as an advanced pivot table in a spreadsheet.
